The Chinese title written on this artwork means "Farm Fields, Always Interesting." This translation is more direct. The real meaning is more like "Everyday fun at the ranch" or "There's always something interesting to do at the farm." Also written on the painting is an indication of the year painted (2011) and the artist's signature.

About the Art:

This is a simplistic painting style, but it also incorporates a lot of detail. This painting really mimics the style of Chinese artwork that has been around for thousands of years.

The artist used some special "watermark xuan paper" for this artwork, which gives it a very unique look. In Chinese, this is know as "water paper". This name comes from the fact that embedded in the paper is a visual texture that mimics the look of waves of water. You have to see it to understand, but trust me, you'll like it. It gives the artwork a certain antique and classic look.

This artwork is completely hand-painted, and is mounted to a handmade silk wall scroll in our workshop.

About the Artist:

The artist's name is WangjianQiu (Wang Jian-Qiu). He lives in Jinan, the capital city of Shandong Province in Northern China (about 5 hours south of Beijing). I was introduced to this artist's work at Qin Xia's studio in Jinan. This artist has been a long time friend of Qin Xia (You may recognize Qin Xia's name from artwork in our flowers and birds category). Wang Jian-Qiu also does some great detailed beautiful woman paintings, and occasionally does some landscapes for us as well.

Gary's random little things about China:

I pee freely:

If you come to China, save your small change...
In Beijing, the government recently passed a law against charging money for using a public toilet.
However, in other cities and towns around China, expect to pay between 2-5 mao (about 3-5 cents) for the use.
Bring your own toilet paper, or expect to pay 5 mao for a small pack of tissue as you enter.

In my opinion, the best public toilet in all of China is at Tian'anmen Square.
This public restroom is not only clean, but also features its own gift shop.
