Frost - Chrysanthemum Flowers and Birds

Frost - Chrysanthemum Wall Scroll close up view

Close up view of the artwork mounted to this silk brocade wall scroll

A very traditional chrysanthemum wall scroll featuring two birds who are braving the cold.
The Chinese title is "Ao Qing Shuang" which can be translated simply as "Frost" or "In Spite of the Frost". One can imply from the title that it suggests your spirits can be up, regardless of the circumstances.

The characters following the title are the year painted (2011), the location (Shandong) and the artist's signature.

About the Art:

This is a simplistic painting style, but it also incorporates a lot of detail. This painting really mimics the style of Chinese artwork that has been around for thousands of years.

This artwork is completely hand-painted and is mounted to a handmade silk wall scroll in our workshop.

About the Artist:

The artist's name is WangjianQiu (Wang Jian-Qiu). He lives in Jinan, the capital city of Shandong Province in Northern China (about 5 hours south of Beijing). I was introduced to this artist's work at Qin Xia's studio in Jinan. This artist has been a long time friend of Qin Xia (You may recognize Qin Xia's name from artwork in our flowers and birds category). Wang Jian-Qiu also does some great detailed beautiful woman paintings, and occasionally does some landscapes for us as well.

Gary's random little things about China:

Are you SURE?

You can search long and hard, in every drugstore and sundries market in China, and you will not find underarm deodorant for sale anywhere.
After traveling all over China, I know this to be true everywhere in China except Hong Kong.

If you ask a Chinese person why there is no deodorant for sale, they will tell you plainly, "Chinese people do not smell bad".

My reply is, "Have you never been on a crowded bus in the summer?"
